In a major setback for social media users across the globe, Meta’s platforms, notably Facebook and Instagram, experienced significant outages on Tuesday. Thousands of users reported difficulties logging in or accessing these popular platforms, causing widespread frustration.
According to reports from Downdetector, around 500,000 Facebook users encountered issues, with an additional 50,000 reports from Instagram users and 10,000 from Facebook Messenger users. Many users found themselves unexpectedly logged out of their accounts, while others received error notifications preventing them from accessing their feeds.
The disruption extended to Threads, Meta’s platform competing with Elon Musk’s X, which also faced technical difficulties, leaving users unable to access their feeds and encountering error messages.
Although the number of outage reports began to decline within an hour of the disruptions starting, concerns remained high among users. By mid-morning Eastern Time, the number of affected users had significantly decreased, but the true extent of the disruption likely exceeded the reported figures.
Meta’s status page confirmed “major disruptions,” particularly affecting Facebook login and other areas of the platform. Andy Stone, a spokesperson for Meta, acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”
While major platform outages are relatively rare, they can have significant implications for users and businesses. The cause of Tuesday’s outage remains unclear, as Meta has not provided any official explanation.
This disruption comes on the heels of a recent network outage experienced by AT&T, underscoring the vulnerability of digital services and the potential impact on consumers.
As users await the restoration of services, concerns about the reliability of digital platforms persist. Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
